Catechesis of the Good Shepherd/ Catequesis del Buen Pastor
Marcos 9:36-37
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is housed on the grounds of St. Patrick Catholic Church in a quaint little house with a prepared environment called an “atrium.” The atrium contains simple, yet beautiful, materials that inspire the child to work. Led by the Holy Spirit, the true teacher in the atrium, the child discovers and experiences both religious education and spiritual formation.
The CGS curriculum is rooted in the Bible and Liturgy of the Catholic Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. The Catechesis program is divided into three levels. Level I is for 3-6 year olds when the child discovers the great love of God for him. Level II is for 6-9 year olds when the child becomes aware of their moral formation and is prepared for First Holy Communion. Level III is for 9-12 year olds and is when they deepen their relationship with God. Each year and throughout the levels the developmentally appropriate materials and presentations carry the child deeper in their Catholic faith.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Global Catechesis and has grown and spread amazingly to 50 countries. The Sisters from the Missionaries of Charity (Saint Mother Teresa’s religious congregation) have adopted the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to present the Gospel to all children they encounter worldwide.
Parents that wish for their children to attend the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at St. Patrick Church must be active parishioners six months before registration in April. A meeting for new parents will be scheduled to give in-depth information pertaining to the CGS.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at St. Patrick Church has both English and Spanish speaking atriums. The children and catechists gather once a week for an hour and a half at the Good Shepherd House.
